Blast From the Past & Seeing Through the Eyes of the Future….

Ahhhhh, to be a student once more….. We were so full of hope and big dreams.  Sometimes I feel the need to go back in time to feel that excitement and “youthful” energy…

Gak! Okay maybe not that far back.

Well, since we’re discussing that era anyways, one of my best friends, Irene, had the fragrance (besides the album) and I soooo- wanted one! The scent wasn’t bad at all. It actually smelled really good!  I remembered the ad and I wanted an exciting life like Debbie Gibson! The ad got it right with the “daydreaming” part…

Viewing a student exhibition at MCAD Museum of Contemporary Art & Design brought me back in time again to my fashion school days.  I was so excited for what the future would bring.  Would I be styling music videos, fashion editorials, print ads, visual merchandising for shops or designing layouts for exhibitions?  I realized I had found my passion and went the extra mile for all my student projects and internships…

I had two student jobs as well.  One as a docent (I led guided tours through my school’s museum) and the other was being a part of the school’s building maintenance department, which eventually led to many wonderful opportunities.  Yes, you read that building-maintenance bit right! I was in charge of fixing broken signages around the campus, and yes, I had a tool box and a matching tool belt, which I of course stylized them by adding jewels, chains and charms.  Anyways, what I’m trying to say is that don’t treat any job as small.  Go further than what is expected….

These jobs led me to assist the Exhibition Designer of the school’s museum where my docent and tool-time skills were put to very good use.  In addition to talking about the collections, I helped figure out layouts and lighting and built with my own two hands display fixtures and installed show pieces.  The most memorable exhibit was that called “The Art of Motion Picture & Costume Design”, where I handled the actual costumes of Moulin Rouge, Harry Potter, Lord of the Rings, Gladiator, Planet of the Apes, Zoolander, Ocean’s Eleven, Knight’s Tale, Legally Blonde among many, many other Hollywood-produced movies.  A fashion stylist and costume designer’s dream come true!!!

Some of the Fashion Design work from the students of De La Salle- College of St. Benilde which are on exhibit at MCAD….

Interior Design….

And Industrial Design…

My friends, Tanya Guerrero and Maria Parsons, both admirable and courageous women for their countless efforts in rescuing cats and dogs would appreciate this animal rescue bike design by Industrial Design student, Patricia Layog….

It’s always refreshing to see student works, most especially in this exhibit setting.  It’s seeing through the eager eyes of a younger generation and becoming aware of their concerns through their projects.

For all design students, continue to visualize and imagine what you want.  Then, exercise and put into practice everything you have learned towards that dream.  Your passion will enable you to work more than what is asked, separating you from the rest. 😉

“Picture yourself vividly as winning and that alone will contribute immeasurably to success. Great living starts with a picture, held in your imagination, of what you would like to do or be.”
-Henry Emerson Fosdick

Now going back to my past again, Debbie Gibson or Tiffany?  Who did you love? 😉
For those too young to know, Tiffany vs. Debbie Gibson were the Christina Aguilera vs. Britney Spears of the 80’s minus the provocative outfits and booty shaking.

Did you know….
Out of the blue in the beginning of 2011 brought us a nice surprise! Instead of battling out in the malls for the title of Mall Queen, these two  battle super predators in “Mega Python Vs. Gatoroid”!  I was partial to Tiffany then but now I love them both because of this!!!  That took a lot of guts!  Now we know what future lies for Christina and Britney heh heh!

Have a great week, everyone!

P.S. Go back in time and listen to this!  Haha! 😉
