Behold Beauty Queens: Binibining Pilipinas 2014 Winners for Sense & Style Magazine

When Arnel Patawaran the AWESOME (editor of the Manila Bulletin Lifestyle section) requested I style this one shoot for Sense & Style Magazine, I hesitated because it required so much in so little time. But Arnel’s soothing voice on the phone calmed any anxiety (like a true mentor) and everything was going to be okay. It was only when I got off the phone, I asked myself, “And what did I just agree to?”

I haven’t worked with this team for almost 5 years and then all of a sudden I’m doing a shoot of this magnitude happening in…. 3 working days! Good luck!

So why is this shoot a big deal? A shoot with one model with a prep time of 3 working days could seem a tad bit crazy already, but what if it were 5 personalities? What if they were all the winners in the Binibining Pilipinas 2014 beauty pageant?

When it was all over and done, I was asked about my experience styling this month’s cover shoot… The fact that they are all winners in their own right, all equally the focal point, was a challenge. More consideration had to be taken into each girl’s outfit and whether it visually created good composition and a nice flow when grouped all together. No one should stand out, and at the same time, no one should be left behind.

Flashback, the day of the shoot…

The location for our first set-up is Finestra, a great Italian restaurant at Solaire. I wanted to “breakdown” the heavy, beauty queen competition-style hair and makeup and make it more natural, fresh-looking and pretty….

The next setup in vintage-style hair and makeup and gowns. I suggested balancing the formal, very put-together looks with a lot of laughs and smiles…

I incorporated more print and texture for their individual setups. You can click on the photo for information on their gowns and accessories…
